Martin Van Buren First Spouse Coin
In the tradition of the First Spouse coins, the Martin Van Buren gold liberty coin was released to the public on November 25th, 2008. Van Buren served as the 8th President of the United States and did not have a wife at the time of his presidency therefore the coin honoring First Spouses minted in his name will feature a seated liberty as designed by engraver Christian Gobrecht.
Since Van Buren was the 8th President, his coin is the 8th one in the series of all the President's wives up until modern times. A first spouse coin cannot be minted until the First Lady's husband has qualified to be on a coin. No living President can qualify to be on a coin, therefore the last scheduled First Spouse coin to be minted is that of Nancy Reagan to be issued in 2016.
The First Spouse gold coin is a one half ounce 24 karat coin with a face value of $10, but of course the price of gold brings these collectors items up to a value of at lease $500 because of the price of gold. Other numismatic factors will certainly drive up the value of these coins.
The Van Buren coin will be limited to an minting of 40,000 total coins that includes all mint marks and proof sets as well. Initially a limit of 10 coins per option (such as mint mark or proof set) will be put in place for any individual buyer and for the family of the buyer. After the first week of issue this limit will be re-evaluated depending on customer demand.
The price of the Van Buren gold coin will be $549 directly from the US Mint and will certainly go up from there. If you are interested in the coin it's probably best to buy it from the US Mint as prices will surely go up and it will cost more on eBay.
