Sunken Treasure Coins - Are They A
Good Investment?
Coin collecting and investing draws a lot of attention to the world of sunken treasure coins or those coins that have been found in sunken ships off the waters of the United States. However, the actual investment quality of these coins can vary, based on the coins that are found and the actual value that they hold once the initial excitement dies away.
The problem with these sunken treasure coins is that they create instant excitement, but that generally fades with time. Along with the fading of the excitement, the coins will likely fade in value as time goes on. You need to make sure that you check the coins out to ensure they’re not being temporarily inflated just because of the hype surrounding the discovery.
One reason that these coins often decrease in price is because they are generally found in large quantities. When this happens, the rarity of the coin decreases, which makes it much less valuable than it might have been if there were only a few found altogether. Sometimes, the coins will sell for a decent price at first, along with a premium because it came from a shipwreck, but as more appear on the market, the value declines greatly. If a coin is just a treasure coin, it is much less likely to hold its value than if it actually has financial or historical significance. However, gold coins that are found at the bottom of the ocean will always at leaset be worth the value of the gold they contain regardless of their condition.
Investor usually prefer highly graded coins, which means that being exposed to the water for so many years is not a good thing for the investment quality of a coin. This means that you have to find the ones that were able to be salvaged, graded, and slabbed, and skip the ones that were tarnished and destroyed by the saltwater. Many coin dealers will sell lower-grade coins in pretty packages, stating that the condition is superseded by the status of the coin as being a treasure coin. This, however, is not the case. A destroyed or low-grade coin is always going to be less valuable than a higher grade coin.
Never buy coins merely because they are sunken treasure coins. You should research the coin independent from its treasure status and find out if it is really worth the money that you intend on spending on it. Take the time to learn the grade and value of the coin, and remember that what is unique in treasure coins one day might be commonplace in the next few years as more coins surface and are released into the collector’s market.
