Shipwreck Gold Coins - Treasure From
The Bottom of The Sea

Shipwreck coins are a great investment for many different types of collectors. However, caution needs to be exercised, because most of these coins are more interesting from a collectible and historical standpoint than a valuable one. Some coins are considered rare and valuable when they are salvaged from shipwrecks, but often when whole trove of coins is discovered, it can have a negative effect on certain coins once though valuable because of their scarcity. The following are some of the most popular shipwreck coins that are available to collectors today.

The 1865 SS Republic Shipwreck was caused by a hurricane off of the coast of Georgia. In 2003, the ship was recovered, along with many gold coins, including some of the finest pieces in the world. There is a run of 1861-O Seated Half Dollars that were found on the ship, which were minted at the New Orleans Mint, making them rarer than other coins. They were nearly impossible to identify because of the soft striking used at the New Orleans Mint during its operations.

The 1846 S.S. New York shipwreck occurred in the Gulf of Mexico, and it almost was lost during a war against Mexico. The S.S. New York was forgotten due to the battles going on in Texas, and didn’t become popular until 161 years later, when it was salvaged. The coins from this ship that were salvaged came from Charlotte, Dahlonega, and New Orleans, which were little known mints, making the coins more valuable.

In 1857, the S.S. Central America wrecked during a hurricane, killing more than 425 men and forsaking many tons of gold in the wreck to the bottom of the sea. In 1989, the ship was recovered, and California Gold Rush coins were found onboard.

Another popular shipwreck coin is the S.S. Brother Jonathan shipwreck, which wrecked in 1865 just off past Crescent City, California when it hit the St. George Reef. The treasure on board was gold mined during the California Golf Rush, which has since been recovered.

Shipwreck coins are a great investment. However, they are generally a better investment of historical value than financial means. If you’re going to invest in shipwreck coins, you need to take the time to research the ship wrecks and make sure that they are legitimate, and that the coins are also legitimate and actually from the ship wreck. Once you verify the legitimacy, investing in shipwreck coins can be great for your collection and investment needs.
