The World’s Most Expensive iPhone -
Can You Say Gold Bling?

It doesn’t seem to matter that the global economy is in a huge recession. To many, it does. However, for Peter Aloisson, an Austrian jeweler, this obviously doesn’t register. If it did, after all, he would have never designed and sold the world’s most expensive iPhone.

This outrageous Apple iPhone is decked out in gold and diamonds, and retails for about $2.5 million. Considering that many phone services offer free or deeply discounted phones for customers with new plans, this is quite a steep price to pay for a phone. The iPhone itself is well worth the investment, considering that it is a phone, MP3 player, computer, and personal data device all in one. A gold iPhone, though?

Surprisingly, people are buying. The phone is known as the King’s Button, and contains 18 carat yellow gold, white gold, and rose gold. It also has 138 cut diamonds on it, that weigh approximately 5.5 carats total. The home button has been replaced with a 6.6 carat diamond, likely the main reason for the outrageous value of this phone, and also the namesake of the iPhone itself. Aloisson has created other designer and decadent phones for people, and sells them all at various (albeit outrageous) prices.

For what you get, the prices are quite reasonable. However, there are very few people that can afford to spend hundreds of thousands and even millions on a phone. The Princess is another model of his, which has 18 carat white gold, 138 princess cut diamonds, 180 brilliant cut diamonds, and weight that is around 17.75 carats. This phone retails for a mere $160,000, which is much more reasonable, but still a little much for a phone. Seriously… this is probably weirder and more insane than the golden toilet. Who needs a phone that costs more than many people’s homes and cars?

Aloisson debuted his first designer phone in 1998, and he isn’t alone. Many companies make designer phones, and there are at least two other companies that make gold iPhones, but theirs only retail for about $1,850 to $2,400. There are also accessories for your iPhone that are made of gold and diamonds, such as the Case-Mate diamond case. This is a 3.5 carat weight 42 diamond encrusted 18 carat gold case for your iPhone. It sells for about $20,000. Given the nature of the economy right now, this all seems a little absurd for a phone, but for those who have the money to spend, go right ahead and indulge.

While the gold iPhone may be cool, it's not a very good investment. Gold coins are much better.
