Dream Gold Coins - Collectible Gold Coins
Most Can Only Dream About
For collectors, there are many gold coins that form a special group of collectible items. These coins are ones that a collector could only dream of owning, and many even strive to own these coins as a goal in their collecting lifetime. The coins listed below are rare, and are some of the most prized coin collectibles in the world today. If you are ever able to get your hands on them, it’s likely that they will cost you dearly, but in most cases the investment will be well worth it.
The first two dream gold coins we’ll consider for collectors are the Stella flowing hair and coiled hair gold coins. These coins are exceptionally rare $4 gold pieces that are collected just like standard issue coins. This coin is named for the five-point star on the reverse of the coin, and was originally suggested to be used as an international trade token. The coin never made it into production for its trade prospects, but four different versions did end up being produced in two different years. In 1879 and 1880, the Flowing Hair and Coiled Hair varieties were born, most of which are now rare. The coiled hair version is especially rare, and is very highly valued.
The 1822 $5 gold piece is another popular dream coin. In 1958, the coin was valued at $15,000, and now rakes in more than $5 million for the piece from that era. There are only a total of three known coins available, even though more than 17,000 were minted. Most were melted down due to the changing values of gold. Two of these are owned by the Smithsonian, which means there is only one known in the collection world. 1907 produced the Saint Gaudens $20 gold piece, which is a pinnacle of currency art for the U.S. There were only 24 proofs of the ultra high relief coin made, and only about 16 or 18 can still be found. They are worth well over $2 million if they are high grade coins.
The 1927-D Saint Gaudens $20 gold piece is another rarity. With only a dozen or so available, they go for about $2 million each, provided that they have a high enough grade. It didn’t used to be rare, but more mints of other years were discovered, while no more surfaced for the 1927 coin.
The final dream coin contains about 2.5 ounces of gold, and has a high survival rate. This is the 1915-S Panama-Pacific Exposition Octagonal $50 gold piece. It might have more availability, but it is unique in its octagonal shape, which makes it desirable to collectors. This one will fetch about $150,000 in a high grade condition. These six coins are all great items for collectors of any kind, and anyone who is able to get their hands on them should treasure them. However, most won’t have the chance to lay their hands on these coins simply because of the high price, but collectors can still dream.
